Update on the Thirsties cover

I have continued using the Thirsties Duo Wrap on Kathryn and have had absolutely no problems with it since the zoo. I think it may have been put on too loose. I had to adjust my mention of it, because it is a WONDERFUL product and I don't want what I wrote to dissuade anyone from using them.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Thirsties cover I bought. I don't know if I mentioned that in the previous post, but it warrants saying it again. I love it. I can use it all day long, with my prefolds. I'm amazed. Of course, having the awesome Tiny Tush prefolds helps too.

My KaWaii Heavywetters continue to be my go-to diapers for nighttime. She wears one all night and has no leaks. They are amazing and less expensive than other pocket diapers.

Ok, so I bought the Thirsties Duo Wrap with inserts and we had a poop escape while at the zoo. However, I can't judge the diaper by this experience, because it's a bit too big on her and I was just too excited to try it to wait until she actually grew into it.

Also, I've continued using it and have had no problems since then, so I KNOW it'll be awesome when she does grow into it.

I bought a Thirsties cover from my local shop and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Did I say I love it? Well, I totally do. It's super cute and I've yet to have a blowout or leak when she's worn it. She can actually wear it all day long. I'm truly amazed with how effective it is and while I balked at the 11.50 price tag at first, I will for sure be happily buying a second or third. They are so worth it.

In addition to those, I also bought new prefolds, because Little Miss is outgrowing her first batch, which were good for up to 15 pounds...well, we're over 16 now. Thankfully she's tall and slender. I bought Tiny Tush prefolds, the unbleached variety and oh gosh, they are fabulous! The hand is SUPER soft and they are extremely absorbent. I bought 6 for $16. Will definitely be buying 6 more to complete our need for prefolds. So happy I ventured out and tried other brands. I love my KaWaiis, but it's nice to find other great dipes too!

About cloth diapers: things you may or may not know

1. You will rarely, possibly never need diaper rash cream, as long as you change your baby regularly.

2. If you need something for diaper rash, be sure it is free of waxes and zinc, as these will create a barrier and cause diapers to repel. Not good.

3. You can use disposable, biodegradable liners if you want to use creams with waxes/zinc. (Ps...a natural cream is available at Target and can be used directly against diapers. California Baby...they have an entire line of natural baby products.)

4. You'll be doing a load of dipes every other day.

5. Doctors seem to know nothing about cloth diapers and will recommend Desitin for rash...do not use.

6. Everyone will expect you to quit using cloth.

7. Everyone will expect cloth diapers to be difficult or gross. They aren't. They take a few minutes for caregivers to "learn" and anyone not willing to take the few minutes probably shouldn't be watching your child anyway.

8. They won't stink up the nursery.

9. They really are cute...and soft...and friendly to baby, mother earth, and your wallet.

10. You only need 24 dipes for baby from newborn to potty user!

11. Like shoes, you will likely not be satisfied with only what you need and you'll be buying more because they are so incredibly cute and baby "NEEDS" them.

12. Baby will need size larger pants for the fluff butt.

13. You can use a delaminated diaper without inserts as a swim diaper. Remember, NO swim diaper (not even the disposable swim diaper) is really meant to absorb.they are meant to catch...you know what.

14. They will not leak or blow out anymore than disposables, as long as you follow care instructions. (I actually experienced more of this with disposables than with cloth)

15. They are easy to use. They are easy to use. Did I mention they are eaay to use?

16. People will tell you they "don't have time to fool with them," as if they require more time. They don't.

17. Many daycares will not accept cloth diapers. Research! Some do. The same can be said of breastfed babies...which is absurd.

18. No, you do not have to touch poop with cloth diapers anymore than you gave to touch poop with disposables.

19. Toddlers can feel when they are wet. This is good for teaching them to use the potty.

20. They are cute. They are easy. They are comparatively inexpensive, they are good for mother earth. They are easy to use.

There you go....20 things you may or may not have known about cloth! :-)

New diaper!

I visited my local shop, Lollibeans, and purchased a Thirsties Duo Diaper in Rose.

I love how super soft the lining and inserts are. There is a terry portion and a hemp portion of the insert.

The only bad thing about buying a single new diaper is you have to prep it separately from other diapers. This means I have to run a small wash cycle for a single diaper (and 3 separate hot cycles for the hemp insert). This would be the case for any new diaper, regardless of brand.

My advice is to buy a couple.

Anyway, I'm excited to try this one. We are having a zoo day tomorrow. Perhaps it'll be a good time to try it on Little Miss.

Saving money with cloth

Here's a great article from Parenting Magazine about the savings you'll see when you use cloth diapers.

I know for us, we spent about 200.00 building our stash and our water bill increased by 20.00 over a three month period (we are billed every three months).

Considering what we would have paid for disposables, the diapers have paid for themselves already.

Now, I just want to buy cute new ones for the fashion. :)

PS...for occasional stubborn stains, the sun is miraculous! I had 2 pre-folds with stubborn stains, so I laid them in the sun, in the nursery floor (too cold outside to hang them) for a few hours and the stains were gone!!!
