Diaper Rash Cause

I was beginning to think I was washing the nappies wrong, but I read up on diaper rash and decided it could possibly be my dairy consumption. I cut waaaay back on it, so I'm only having 1-ish serving a day and the rash cleared up. Her little heiney looks great now!

I had to do the same thing with oranges, because she'd get a really angry looking raw ring around her anus. :( Once I cut them out (completely) from my diet she was fine.

Products I'm in love with right now:

1. California Baby Calming Diaper Rash Cream: It's fabulous and you literally only need a pea sized amount...and this will REALLY coat the bottom. I generally use less than that. It's $11.00 a tube, but well worth it. It's cloth diaper safe, so no need for liners.

2. Kolcraft Lights n Vibes bassinet: it was great when she was little, because the bed lifts off the base and I could out her next to our bed. Our bed is low-profile (so to speak)...actually it is a large, thick mattress ob the floor because in this old, quirky house, the queen box spring wouldn't fit up the stairs. Our guest bed has two box springs.

I love it now for the mobile, which fits on her crib.

3. Infantino jungle activity mat: she loves it. I love that the mat can be wiped clean, but is thick enough to ensure her comfort even when on a bare floor.

4. Terry baby washcloths: I use them as cloth wipes for diaper changes. They are great. Not too big and soft enough for baby.

New pics below.

Ugh...

I'm having a down day. Perhaps because little miss didn't sleep much last might, so I'm exhausted.

To boost my mood, I put on my Mossimo jeans from Target. I can't believe 1.) I bought them and 2.) love them! They make me feel like I look good. I like my booty in them. I also put on a pair of my favorite Steve Madden heels. Logical? Nope, but it helped me feel better.

I fixed my hair and out on a favorite shirt.

Now, I'm chilling with my little sweet, watching Long Island Medium and enjoying a cup of decaf.

Stains, be gone!!

FINALLY.

I finally figured out how to get rid of stains. And to think people out there claim breast milk doesn't stain. Whatev!

Apparently my gal is a monster pooper, because today I noticed I had stains on nearly all of my prefolds! Yesterday, for whatever reason, she pooped all day long! It was crazy. I had to wash all but a few prefolds and all of the pockets.

So, because I had all of them to do, I did two loads and I presoaked both (as usual) and used a scoop of OxiClean in both loads, plus more detergent than I have been. I washed them in cold, then ran a hot wash/cold rinse with nothing added.

When they came out, they were clean and smelled fresh, not like detergent. I've been hesitant to use more detergent, because I don't want build-up, but they weren't getting clean and I couldn't bear to put another yellow-stained diaper on my beautiful girl.

I feel so much better now. As long as she doesn't get a rash, we're golden.

Another "finally:" here's a picture of Kathryn in her cheetah KaWaii cover with prefold.

Disposable wipes no more

I can't use disposable wipes. After dealing with a terrible rash for a week after my last post, I went back to cloth wipes and water. The rash went away.

I have to keep Kathryn changed and dry. She is very moisture sensitive. I'm going to get some white fleece to make liners for the prefolds. Fleece whicks away the moisture, keeping baby dry. It's cheap and easy too.

Other than that, all is going great.

My fave dipes:
1. KaWaii Heavywetters: Great for moisture sensitive babies like my gal, easy to use, excellent diaper.
2. Cocalo Perfect Bum: I love using these with disposable, compostible inserts. They are trim and fit snugly without being too tight. The one she has is super cute too. Pink with a pink ruffled.
3. Prefolds and covers!! Easy (once you get the gang of the fold) and inexpensive. We are using only KaWaii covers (and they are great), but I'd like to explore Thirsties. I've heard great things about them.

I want to have a good stash so they aren't washed so much they wear out fast.

My least face dipes:
1. Gdiapers. I like how trim they are and I like and use the disposable/compostible inserts. I don't like that they're sized. I don't like the elastic on the liner.  Don't like that they don't have prints. I don't like the velcro in the back.

I'm still experiencing stains. :( That bugs my OCD. I'm trying OxiClean. Hopefully it'll work. It's too cold outside to be hanging diapers. If this doesn't work, I'll use a little bleach and be sure to rinse the heck out of them.

So glad I chose cloth; breastfeeding

Cloth diaper by BumbleBees

Cloth diapering is going so well! I'm super thankful too, because a recent article/headline said there may be a shortage of disposable diapers due to some explosion in Japan or somewhere and therefore the cost of disposables is likely to skyrocket.

Also, Kathryn's butt got sooooo red during the short time we used Pampers (I may have already mentioned this....sorry, sleep deprived and baby distracted mama here).

With the cloth, she's doing great. I also bought California Baby Calming Diaper Cream. It's fabulous and smells wonderful. WAY better than the Desitin I used with my boys over a decade ago.

I had a couple of stains on prefolds, but I used a little peroxide and the stains are gone. The only thing is, I noticed that the diapers feel different. I washed them in the long, extra rinse cycle on the washer (fabulous for diapers, by the way!), but they still feel different. I'm going to keep a close eye on Kathryn's bottom to be sure she has no reaction to them.

We bought 6 more KaWaii HeavyWetters last night (Holstein cow, lime and blue dotty prints). They are, by far, our favorites and we both agree (so cool that my husband is offering opinions and participating happily with cloth diapering!!) that the snaps are best. The velcro ones get pills in the wash and it bugs me. We also bought 3 more covers (tiger and jaguar print! lol), because I do like the prefolds and covers quite a lot. I'll have to buy more prefolds in a few months, but we are good for now.

It's crazy to think that, not including what we bought last night, if we were using disposables, we'd already have spent the money we used to buy cloth...and cloth lasts from birth to potty-training. Insane. Even with the extra we'll be spending on water, we'll still be saving a hell of a lot of money.

I started out using cloth wipes, but have since started using disposable wipes. I may go back to cloth once she starts eliminating less often. At this point, I was going through the cloth wipes way too quickly. I guess I underestimated how many I'd need. I have no problem making adjustments as things progress. It's all about what's best for my baby.

For me, cloth diapering and breastfeeding go hand-in-hand. I mean, it's because I'm breastfeeding that cloth diapering is easier. Breast milk poo doesn't stain like formula poo does. Nor does breast milk spit-up. Thank goodness, because she does a lot of spitting up...she's a very aggressive eater.

Anyway...about that. My breasts have FINALLY adjusted to feeding her. I had to overcome several challenges.

1. Sore, cracked and (one) bleeding nipple/s.
2. Engorgement (as most mamas go through)
3. Mastitis
4. Poor latch (she finally figured it out at about 3 weeks...just before I got mastitis!)

Now, we are doing well and I feel confident enough with her latch to let her nurse while I'm in the side lying position.

Listening intently to Mommy

I think we're in the smooth sailing stage...yay. It was difficult. I cried several nights and days with sore nipples. I even, in a moment of serious pain, considered for a second, giving up. However, the thought of giving my baby formula helped me immediately toss that thought to the side. I just can't imagine giving my child a chemical-laden "food." Plus, have you seen the articles about the recalls? At least I know my milk is good for her.

Most recent picture...I love that her personality is coming out. She smiles a lot now and coos!
At her last appointment, she gained a pound and grew another inch!
Love my Katydid.

Doing well!

So far so good with cloth! We have had a couple of blowouts, but that was because I didn't put the cover on tight enough. Lesson learned.

Kathryn's bottom is clearing up quite quickly since the official change. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but the creases of her legs were terribly red and raw from the Pampers.

I like prefolds a lot since I've gotten better with the folding. I showed K how to do it, so maybe he'll try to change her soon. He changes her using the KaWaii HeavyWetters, but has yet to try the prefolds.

So glad I took the chance and went with cloth. :-)

Back to sposies, but...

Only temporarily, thank goodness.

I decided to go back to Pampers Swaddlers Sensitives because Kathryn's umbilical cord was being rubbed by the cloth covers and looked goopy and smelled a little funny. So, we bought out first and only pack of disposable dipes.

The funny thing is, they weren't even necessary, because her umbilical cord fell off the very next day (@ 5 days old), doesn't smell and looks great. I worried for nothing. Apparently the new "do nothing to them" method is more effective than the old alcohol method. It took 2 weeks for my boys to lose theirs the old way.

I'll be glad to get her out of these dipes, because she is getting red and when she pees, it really smells. That doesn't happen with cloth.

She is doing great otherwise! I can't wait to get her little bottom back in some fluff!  :) I'll post a pic this week for sure.

They say using your non-dominate hand is good for brain synapses...if so, this whole nursing while blogging with my left hand is helping me. LOL.
I don't do it much, because I love  interacting with her, but occasionally it is good.

First days

So my beautiful daughter was born on Monday afternoon and we got to start cloth on Wednesday, because her poop switched to the signature yellow, seedy breast milk poop.

You don't have to wait for the yellow poop, but I wanted to, so I just used the Pampered Swaddlers that the hospital gave to us.

So far, so good with cloth. No leaks and at this point I'm only using prefolds. Covers aren't even necessary because she's not soaking diapers yet.

I washed a load and a few of them stained. This surprised me. I didn't expect it with brewer milk poop. I even washed them twice and then did an extra rinse. They say you don't have to soak them, but I think I will anyway.

Overall, a good experience. I'm still not 100% on the snapee thing. One diaper fell off! Lol! I even feel awkward doing the snaps on the KaWaiis. I'm sure this will get better with practice. I'm not stressed about it. So far I really love the KaWaii Heavywetters. I'd love to get more of them.

I've also used the Gdiapers with the disposable inserts. They work ok now, but I have a feeling when she is older, they will leak. Glad I only bought two of them to try. The disposables can be used in my other covers, so no biggie there.

I need to get a fluff butt pic of her, but she's sleeping and being so young, I prefer to keep her swaddled and cozy. I'll post pics soon.

Here's a pic of her from her very first day. She had fallen asleep in my arms. As a matter of fact, this is how we spent our only night at the hospital. It was great.

Diaper timelines

Here's a link to a cloth diaper timeline for your reading pleasure.

Cloth Diaper Timeline

Here's one about disposable diapers.

The Politics of Diapers

It seems people have known about the effects disposable diapers have on the environment for a long time, but nothing has been done to reduce the use of them. This really pisses me off, because we only have ONE EARTH...we all share it, regardless of the borders in which we live.

To me, it is shameful that we put convenience before consciousness.

Addicted? Could I be?

So I wanted to have at least a couple more newborn sized "nappies" for my little sweetie, so I had a bit more left on a Babies R Us card...I know, patronizing the corporate monster, but hey. It's a gift card. So anyway, I decided I'd give the G Diapers a try, even though I've heard bad things about them. I've heard they leak quite a bit, but I'm willing to try them and besides, in the beginning the baby won't have full-on peeing moments like later and I have great diapers for later.

I also got a pack of the disposable inserts. These can be flushed in the toilet or used in the garden as compost (when wet ONLY, of course). So I figured my hubby might like that rather than fooling with cloth...although he is supportive of the entire idea. Yay.

So anyway, I love buying new dipes! I swear, I might be addicted to it...I've heard of this, but I swore it would never happen to me. I'd be careful in my diaper buying. I'd not overdo it. I could control myself! I had will power dammit and I was not going to go over the edge!! Really!

Then I searched cloth diapers and oh my goodness, there are some super cute ones out there. Plus, there is a super cute store within walking distance of my house. It's like having a dealer right outside any time I want to get something! Except on Monday. they are closed on Monday.

I also discovered Bumble Bees on Facebook....

http://www.facebook.com/BumbleBeesClothNappies

A friend of mine is having a diaper made for me and I'm her first US customer! :) I can't wait to see it! She makes some BEAUTIFUL and adorable nappies! :)

Anyway, I just can't get enough of the cuteness of cloth. How could anyone ever consider them boring? I mean, shopping for them is like shopping for a cute outfit every time! lol

So my new adventure of late is:

I want to make a wetbag for the nursery. I could go to the cute boutique just down the street, but I really want to make one of my own, using fabric of my choice. I did fine a good tutorial online after speaking with other women who have made them themselves.

http://thediymommy.com/sew-a-wet-bag/

This is for a small bag, but I can modify it for a larger one. We'll see if I have time to get to it. If not, I can always visit Lollibeans Boutique to pick one up. No biggie.

The reason I may not have time is because I'm decoupaging a table this week...Decoupage is great for anyone who, as a child, enjoyed covering her hand in glue just so it could dry and be pulled off...yeah, I was that weirdo. ;-) I remember spending time with my cousin one summer evening sitting on the porch, trying to pull a big swath of glue from my 6 year old hand.

Some things never get old.

DIY Burp Cloths, Semi-Crunchy? and a cute baby gift!

I guess you might label me semi-crunchy. I actually came across that label yesterday in a forum and as I was listening to the ladies talk about their "crunchy" status, I realized I fell in the semi-crunchy realm of the eco-friendly lifestyle.

Anyway...from what I've read, this is all about living eco-friendly and I have been striving to do that for a number of years. Let's say since my boys were about 4 & 5.

I never thought of it as a choice of anything except trying to live by what is right...trying to live as a responsible human and not take part in systematically destroying my own habitat (as well as the habitat of other important animals) like so many of us blindly do. I'm not going to formally label myself "semi-crunchy." I hate labels...they are so limiting, but it might give you an idea of where I'm coming from.

So my choosing to cloth diaper and breastfeed just falls into this type of lifestyle. I mean...it's strange to me that people look at breastfeeding the way they do: negatively, although thankfully things have changed even since my boys were babies and society is becoming more open about it. Haha, society has become more open about human mothers feeding their human babies milk from their human bodies, that was naturally formulated for their offspring.

Yet we drink milk from a cow that was naturally formulated for calves and don't blink an eye...

Strange mentality.

So anyway, how did I get on this topic?

Oh yeah, today I'm going to be sewing! Yay! I love sewing and creating, especially sewing and creating useful things.

I'm going to make burp cloths today instead of buying them at the store. Why buy them at the store, when I can make super cute ones with patterns I love right here at home?

I have a friend who is expecting at the beginning of October, another at the end of October and yet another in early September like me. In addition to that, my step-brother & his wife are expecting their first in December AND my step-sister just had twins this month!

Can you say BABY BOOM?! So funny....we've gone YEARS with no babies in our family and now this explosion. It's nuts, but delightful lunacy and Christmas is going to be awesome this year.

So I'm having a baby shower tomorrow, but my friend who is expecting in September will also be there and she says, "I need nothing. I have J's stuff from when he was a baby and my sister is giving us all of her stuff from my niece." Well, I have to get her SOMETHING and you can never have too many burp cloths, so I'm making her a few and also giving her some organic bath essentials as a gift. Something simple, but useful.

I may end up doing this for everyone I know who is having babies this year. Otherwise, I'd be totally broke by Christmas and I can't let that happen! lol Plus, it's super fun to give something you actually put your energy into.

For those who are interested and who may be new to sewing, I've found a link with a great tutorial for burp cloths. They are simple to make, but this site has great photos and it's a good step-by-step tutorial for newbies.

It's called The Hazel Bloom. You can even pin her on Pinterest or follow her on Facebook. She has recipes and all sorts of goodies.

DIY BURP CLOTHS:

Here are some pictures of the burp cloths I made. I  made my first two based on the size mentioned in the post above, but I like mine a little bigger, so I made the last two about  9.5 x 14.

The sewing set-up! Random fabrics, 2 receiving blankets (great because they are already nice and soft and flannel is a great burp cloth fabric, plus they have cute designs, scissors, thread, pins, pencil.

Using sewing machine or you an hand sew...sew right side to right side of each fabric. Be sure to remove your pins as you go so you don't bend/break your sewing needle (if using machine)!

Turn right side out, being sure to pull out corners.
(below)

One complete! I love the green plaid with the cool bird print.

Four complete. I like using fabrics that aren't necessarily "baby." Two of these are your average quilter's cotton and two are from the artist's group in the quilting section. I love them.

BABY SHOWER GIFT USING DIY BURP CLOTHS

So the next step in this gift is to create two Peas in a Pod with washcloths and cute ribbon!

To begin...find cute washcloths. Contrary to what I was thinking when I went shopping today, you don't NEED a green washcloth, but if you find one, that'll be super cute too. :) I saw a pink set and this yellow and white set. Pink isn't my favorite, so I went with this one.

Fold the "pod" cloth as shown above and set aside.

As shown in the next three photos, roll each of the "pea" washcloths.

Roll from one end, being sure you roll in the direction where the loose corner was on your first roll. This will secure it.

Tack with needle and thread.

 Ta-da!
Two perfect peas. ;-)

Place in folded "pod" washcloth. You may need to adjust the fold of the "pod," so that it fits around the peas securely.

Tie each end with ribbon and voila!
Two peas in a pod washcloth set.

I wrapped ribbon around the burp cloths, with a cute little tag.

I added a few other goodies...natural bath shampoo and lotion, pacifiers and a rubber ducky that lets mama know if the water is a good temperature for the baby. The washcloth set I bought had a cute froggy with it, so he's tucked in under the burp cloths.

I couldn't resist this cute box to wrap it all in.

Now, to make burp cloths for my own baby!

Diaper station set up.

Well, I have everything ready for little one when she arrives. I even have a basket with 12 diapers ready for the first day. (Second photo)

The other basket is for extras and the second shelf has extra covers.

I found the coolest boutique in my neighborhood! It's called Lollibeans Boutique. They have tons of cloth diaper essentials and lots of cool organic stuff. I'm so excited. I'll for sure be back to shop. I left them my number to call me when they get the snap-eez in. I love that I'll be able to support a local small business.

Oh...I have her things ready for the big day! The drive home from the hospital. Of course I've included a cute newborn size cloth diaper. :-) She will come home in the Harley Davidson outfit my hubby bought, a blanket I made for her, and the ruffle-butt diaper cover. Yay. I'm in the nesting mode and trying to control it a little bit, so I'm not packing just yet...but I have it ready. Maybe tomorrow I'll ready my things. :-)

Getting so incredibly excited!

I find it funny...

It's funny to me that when I or my husband mention that we're going to use cloth diapers, the response is almost always, "good luck with the cloth diapers." The tone is not genuine, but somewhat condescending...as if the whole experience will be horrible and we are naive new parents who have an idealized view of baby diapering.

However, anyone who has ever diapered a baby, including myself knows that besides the washing, disposables come with their own slew of issues...at least they did for me.

1. They take hundreds of years to decompose. Diapers I wore as a baby are still in the landfills. That's completely horrible.

2. With my boys, I can't tell you how many time the fronts of their clothes were soaked because they peed straight up and out of their diapers...and there is no way to adjust the absorbency of the front of a disposable diaper to prevent this.

3. Disposable diapers leak...contrary to popular belief, this is not a problem of the cloth diaper alone. They leak. Poop will burst forth from the seams of a disposable diaper just as easily as it will from cloth. You will get pooped on. Cloth or disposable. Period. Sorry.

4. Many babies are allergic to the ingredients in disposable diapers. Case in point, my nephew. My sister wrestled with a terrible, angry red bottom with blisters pretty much the entire time her son was in diapers. :( Cloth wasn't considered, so the only alternative was to switch back and forth between diapers to deal with varying degrees of diaper rash. thankfully he was potty trained fairly early.

5. Diaper rash occurs with either type of diaper. (obviously from #4)

Yay! New shipment!

We are all set now. With this addition to our stash, we have a great start and all the diapers we *need* for a while. :-) So excited to get these prepped and ready for my little girl.

My stash of covers

So far we have 6 covers.
5 are KaWaii Heavywetters and one is by a brand called Cocala...or something like that. I know nothing about this brand. Just thought it was cute and worth a shot. It's the only sized one we have so far. It's for 6-13 lbs.
I know the KaWaii ones are great for sure.
As far as inserts go, we have 22 MF inserts and one tri-fold insert which came with the pink ruffled cover.
We also ordered a set last night. It had 2 one-size covers and 24 cotton inserts. They were from luvyourbaby.com and I think they were bumgenius.
Once we get those, I think we'll be set.

Cloth diaper folds

I'm collecting these resources for myself so I don't have to bookmark a bunch of pages. This way, I have one place for all my resources. :) This source is for a few different folds for prefolds.

New inserts!

I know many people who buy things from registries don't like to buy the "boring, every day" items such as diapers, rash ointment, wipes, etc, but I have to say when a package was sitting on my front porch from LuvYourBaby, I was thrilled to open it because I knew it had to be something pertaining to cloth diapers from the registry!!!

And it was...It was a pack of KaWaii microfiber inserts! Yay! I'm so happy. We now have 27 inserts, because they threw in 2 extras in the pack.

I want to get some cotton pre-folds from Target and some covers as well.

OH!!!! I found out a friend of mine is having a cover custom made for the baby by her friend in England! It's going to be made from a fabric with adorable VW bugs on it! Oh goodness, it's going to be darling! :-) I can't wait to see the baby in it.

Speaking of baby...she's kicking like mad. My midwife said she's lying sideways, with her head on my right side. I don't know why it worries me, but it does. I really hope she turns before her birth day.

I'm having a daughter...wow. My heart is filled with so much joy these days, I could cry. I have an amazing husband and two fantastic sons who have grown into wonderful young men...and now I'm having a daughter.

Life is so amazing.
I'm so incredibly thankful and excited to see what sort of adventures are ahead of me.

Sunday, May 27, 2012

I don't remember when the idea to cloth diaper hit me. I think it was when I was living in a cabin circa 1790 with very few modern amenities and my sons were older. I think that's when I starting thinking about the fact that the diapers I used when they were little were still festering in a landfill somewhere. When one lives in a situation where water is purchased in small amounts and brought to the home, or where one uses the bathroom beneath the large expanse of stars...one begins to think about one's effect and PLACE within the environment.

I think humans have forgotten this important fact: we are animals. We have a natural place in the environment, but we have isolated ourselves from it with concrete, "logic," and walls. Because of this, we are systematically destroying our own environment.

I've always had a love of nature, even though my early childhood was spent in the city, in a trailer park with a yard that consisted mostly of dirt. I loved to pet bees back then and they'd let me. I was never stung unless I stepped on one by accident. Later, it was trees...I love trees and their wisdom and energy. As a teen, I'd escape from my brooding into the woods, and climb a tree to watch a red tailed hawk care for her babies. She didn't seem to mind my being there, as long a I kept my distance and I always did.

As a kid, I loved observing nature, but I still didn't see myself as PART of it. That was not until adulthood, when I was about 24 and my sons were 4 and 5 years old.

My sons are now 15 & 17 years old and much has changed since they were young. I am now expecting my third child, a little girl. She is due September 10th and I plan to use cloth diapers rather than petroleum based disposables.

And that's about all I know at this point.

Searching the internet for information on cloth diapering is like sitting in a room full of mother-in-laws and asking them what is good and bad during pregnancy. You get a hell of a lot of information, most of which you can probably do without.

Just the terms alone are difficult to navigate! AIO...2IO...covers, inserts, doublers, flats, hybrids, prefolds, wool balls, cd-friendly ointment, etc. Everyday I find a new term, then I need to research to discover what the heck it means and whether or not it is vital to my child not ending up with a yeast infection on her tiny heiney.

What I have discovered so far is that:

There are two different overall types: sized diapers ( newborn, s, m, l), and one-size diapers, which are adjustable by weight...you simply move the snaps to accommodate your baby. These can be used from birth to potty-training.

AIO = all in one...these diapers are much like disposables, except you don't throw them away (of course), but when they are soiled or wet, you simply put them in the diaper pail to be washed later (after spraying out the poo, of course) It is just as it says, all in one.

2IO = two pieces in one. Now I'm still not clear on this...I THINK this means the pocket ones where you have inserts (super soft, wool, cotton or microfiber fabric inserts) that you "insert" into a pocket in the diaper. The diaper itself also has a fabric interior, so when the baby soils or wets in the diaper, you can't reuse the cover, it must all be washed. I'm still learning, so this could be wrong and I might be describing what the term "pocket diapers."

Hybrids = diapers that can be used using cloth inserts or disposable inserts. Examples of these are the GDiapers...the disposable inserts can actually be flushed down the toilet, when used correctly. I don't know if they have pockets or if you just use "flats"inside a cover. I have to continue my research.

Doublers = just as it sounds, they double...and in this case, they double the fabric (thus the absorbancy) of the diaper. You can buy these in addition to your diapers. There are all sorts of them...wool, bamboo, cotton, microfiber, etc.

Flats - I'm not sure exactly what these are. I don't know if they are like prefolds (to be discussed next) and need to be folded before placed in a cover, or if they are additional lining for a diaper or what, but they are mentioned a lot on cd (cloth diapering) message boards and groups.

Prefolds = exactly a it sounds. they are cloth diapers that are prefolded to make it easy to put on your baby. These are the type you often picture when you think of a cloth diaper. Rectangular and prefolded in thirds, with the widest part being the center.

Covers - These are waterproof covers that you put over your prefolds. They don't have to be washed every time the baby soils or wets and can be wiped out and reused immediately. From what I've researched, prefolds and covers are the most economical way to cd.

Wool balls = used in the dryer...not sure of the purpose, but I have a feeling it's to help prep the diapers (I'll discuss this later) or it's to add to the softness. Not sure.

CD-friendly ointment = A lot of ointments are not good for cloth diapers! They can actually deteriorate the diapers when used with them, so goodbye, Desitin! There are lots of cd-friendly butt ointments online and in cd-ing shops, if you're lucky enough to have one near you (I'm not).

Without a neighborhood CD-ing shop, I'm out in the internet world, treading information like a shipwrecked survivor treading water in the sea, but I am learning.

So far I have purchased only 5 cloth diapers. I've gotten the KaWaii Heavywetters, which have gotten excellent reviews from lots of boards and groups and even a reliable human resource who says she used them exclusively. These are one-size, and they are either considered AIO or 2IO...they have a pocket, 2 microfiber inserts and the interior is super-duper soft cloth. They come in an array of colors and adorable prints. I chose an animal print that is gender neutral. The only preparation they require is to be washed and dried before use, because they are microfiber.

Looking at them now, on their smallest setting, I think they will fall off of my newborn, but we'll see.

I've created a registry, with much of the focus on cloth diapers and accessories. I hope people get things like that rather than cutesy outfits. I've tried to stress that, because diapers are a necessity for sure and it does cost quite a bit at the front to get started. A lot of people on boards say they registered for diapers and not none...or people bought disposables instead, because they "didn't think cloth was a good idea," or they thought they parents "would end up switching to disposables anyway."

I really hope this doesn't happen, but we'll see.

On the registry, I've added different types of diapers, so I can experiment with what works best for my baby. I asked for a few newborn size, after seeing how big the KaWaii diapers are on the smallest setting. I though about the umbilical cord and the fact that I want it to be outside the diaper until it falls off, so I think NB size will accommodate that well.

I also asked for prefolds and covers, because they are cheaper and I've heard they work well these days. I went for the ones with 5 stars and lots of reviews with cute covers with the same.

I've not gone for the hybrids...the only ones I've really seen are GDiapers and with the reviews I've seen and the conversations I've seen on boards, I think I'll pass. Sounds like they have a lot of leaks and blowouts and who wants to deal with more of those than is normal? Not this girl!

I'l get some pictures uploaded on here soon. For now, I just wanted to give an overview. It's a lot to take in...and I think it's best to go slow!

I purchased my KaWaii's from LuvYourBaby...I must post this warning. Do not wait until the last minute to order these. It took a few weeks for me to get them. They actually ship from Canada. However, they have a good inventory...Kelly's Closet had them on back order.
